Installing mods
Search Modrinth and CurseForge, manage dependencies, and roll back when something breaks.
Sapling pulls mods from two sources: Modrinth and CurseForge. Search results from both appear in one list, marked with their origin. You install, update, and remove them from the dashboard — no SFTP, no manual JAR juggling.
Adding a mod
- Open your server in the dashboard and click the Mods tab.
- Search for a mod by name. Filter by mod loader (Fabric, Forge, etc.) and Minecraft version.
- Click Add. Sapling resolves dependencies and adds those too.
- Restart the server when prompted (or schedule the restart for off-peak hours).
Updating a mod
Updates surface as a badge on the Mods tab. We don't auto-update — modded Minecraft updates frequently break worlds, so we leave the timing to you. When you're ready, click Update all or pick mods individually.
When something breaks
Common culprits and fixes:
- Server won't start after adding a mod. Check the live console for the stack trace. It almost always names the offending mod in the first few lines.
- Crash on world load. Often a missing dependency. The Mods tab now highlights unresolved dependencies in red — install those and try again.
- Mod version mismatch. Each mod entry shows which Minecraft versions and loaders it's compatible with. Mods built for 1.20 won't work on a 1.21 server, even if the dashboard lets you add them.
Licensing
Mods on Modrinth and CurseForge are published under a range of licences. Most permit private use on a server like yours without ceremony. If you're running a public, monetised, or pay-to-play server, check each mod's licence — some require permission for that use case.
